26 Mar
Summary
- Lancet report recommends a citizen-centered health system.
- Concerns raised on uneven care quality and mental health gaps.
- Consultation held in Ahmedabad with three states participating.

A recent consultation in Ahmedabad focused on implementing recommendations from the Lancet Commission's report on a citizen-centered health system for India. Participants discussed creating an integrated system to address contemporary health concerns.
Mirai Chatterjee, a commissioner on the Lancet panel, highlighted persistent issues such as uneven quality of care, fragmented delivery, and poor governance. She specifically pointed out growing mental health concerns and implementation gaps, especially regarding local counselors at the primary care level.
The commission's report prioritizes citizens' needs and aspirations over the system's structure. Experts like Vikram Patel stressed the importance of a high-performing, publicly financed, and publicly provided integrated healthcare delivery system to achieve universal health coverage.
The consultation, organized by SEWA's health initiative, included stakeholders from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, signaling a move towards collaborative reform efforts across states.
