India Faces Cancer Surge: 15.7 Lakh Cases by 2025

India is confronting a substantial increase in its cancer burden, with projections estimating close to 15.7 lakh cases by 2025. A critical concern is the late diagnosis, with 60-70% of patients identified at advanced stages. This delay significantly hampers the effectiveness of treatments, despite the recent availability of cutting-edge therapies such as CAR-T cell treatment, precision radiotherapy, and robotic surgery in the country.

The disparity in accessing care is a major driver of this crisis. While advanced medical technologies are being adopted by top cancer centers, screening remains largely opportunistic and limited to affluent populations. This creates a significant gap, particularly for lower socioeconomic strata who often present with late-stage cancer, leading to higher mortality rates.

Doctors emphasize that early detection through regular screening, like mammograms for women over 40, can dramatically reduce mortality. However, persistent myths and stigma surrounding cancer and screening methods act as barriers. Simultaneously, the integration of Artificial Intelligence into cancer care is promising for diagnostics and treatment planning, but caution is advised against patient self-diagnosis using AI tools.

Personalized treatment plans, designed by multidisciplinary tumor boards, are becoming the norm, prioritizing organ preservation and patient involvement. While India is advancing its cancer care standards, the crucial battle for improved outcomes lies in enhancing public awareness, expanding screening accessibility, and ensuring timely diagnosis for all.
