India's Breast Cancer Cases Surge, Experts Warn
7 Mar
Summary
- Breast cancer cases in India have more than doubled in three decades.
- Lifestyle changes are identified as contributing factors to the rise.
- Access to treatment remains a significant challenge for many patients.

Breast cancer cases in India have dramatically increased over the last three decades. Experts speaking at the St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference in Kolkata on March 7, 2026, reported that incidence has risen from 13 per 100,000 women in 1990 to 29.4 per 100,000 in 2023. This surge is attributed to a combination of factors including lifestyle changes, lack of breastfeeding, and increased alcohol and tobacco use.
While improved screening and awareness have led to more early detections, significant challenges remain regarding access to treatment. Dr. Soumen Das highlighted that geographical and economic factors create barriers, preventing many from receiving adequate care. His institute is focusing on making global cancer drugs accessible in remote areas and has initiated programs like providing temporary employment to patient caregivers to improve treatment completion rates.
