30 Sep
Summary
- Incision-free radiation treats severe depression with lasting relief.
- 89% of participants showed improvement in depression scores.
- Suicidal thoughts receded for nearly all participants post-treatment.
Researchers have developed an incision-free method to treat severe depression by targeting specific areas of the brain with radiation. This novel approach, called stereotactic radiosurgical capsulotomy, aims to interrupt brain circuits involved in mood disorders without surgical intervention or implanted devices.
The preliminary study, involving 20 participants with treatment-resistant depression, revealed significant positive outcomes. A substantial 89% of participants showed improvement in their depression scores, with a dramatic reduction in suicidal thoughts for nearly all those affected.
These positive effects were sustained for a median of three years post-treatment. The procedure showed no severe neurologic or cognitive side effects, with only mild instances of headache or dizziness reported by a few patients.
While the results are promising, larger trials are necessary to confirm the efficacy and safety of this technique. The findings were presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology annual meeting, suggesting a potential new avenue for managing difficult-to-treat depression.
