Ilona and her husband Rafal, 43, were overjoyed when she fell pregnant after 5 years of trying. However, their happiness soon turned to tragedy as Ilona never got to hold her newborn baby, Antony.
Ilona, who worked in a hospital herself, was diagnosed with high blood pressure the day before her cesarean delivery. Despite medication, her condition worsened, and hours after the birth, she complained of headaches, blurred vision, and vomiting before becoming unresponsive. A CT scan revealed a major brain bleed, and Ilona was rushed to a hospital in Cambridge, where doctors said nothing could be done to save her. Her life support was switched off on February 25, 2023, 11 days after Antony's birth.
