Summary
- Huntington's Disease is a rare, hereditary neurodegenerative condition.
- Lack of recognition hinders access to government aid and treatment.
- Families face immense financial and emotional burdens caring for patients.

Huntington's Disease (HD), a progressive and hereditary neurodegenerative condition, is increasingly recognized as underdiagnosed in India due to limited awareness. Families like Mahalakshmi's in Andhra Pradesh bear the heavy burden of this rare disease, which causes severe motor, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. The autosomal dominant inheritance pattern means each first-degree relative has a 50% risk of inheriting HD, leaving generations vulnerable.
Despite its debilitating effects, HD is not included in India's National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD)-2021, leaving patients and their families without crucial government aid. This oversight forces families to rely on out-of-pocket expenses for treatments that can cost up to ₹15 lakh, exacerbating financial strain. While treatments can improve quality of life, there is currently no cure for the disease.
There is a critical need for increased awareness, genetic counseling centers, and the inclusion of HD in national rare disease policies. The Huntington's Disease Society of India is advocating for multi-disciplinary care centers and government recognition to provide much-needed support to affected individuals and their caregivers, who face immense mental and physical challenges.
