Human Milk Donation Gains Acceptance
3 Apr
Summary
- Human milk donation is shedding inhibitions, enabling large-scale collection.
- The Rotary Human Milk Bank has benefited over 8,000 newborns.
- Similar milk banks operate in other Andhra Pradesh cities.

Society's hesitations regarding human milk donation are diminishing, paving the way for expanded collection efforts. The Rotary Human Milk Bank, established two years ago at the Government Maternity Hospital in Tirupati, is marking its second anniversary. This initiative has become a model for others, with District Collector S. Venkateswar praising its role in collecting, pasteurizing, and storing mother's milk for infants in need.
Initially raising eyebrows, the milk bank has demonstrated significant impact. It has provided vital nourishment to 8,288 newborns, contributing to a substantial decrease in the infant mortality rate. The bank's chairman highlighted that, much like blood donation, human milk donation will gain wider acceptance.
Complementing the Tirupati facility, similar milk banks are actively serving communities in Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Vijayawada, and Anantapur. Officials are encouraging more lactating mothers to participate and urging the public to utilize these life-saving services.
