12 Mar
Summary
- A 16-year-old recovering from leg surgery was expelled from a hotel.
- Hotel staff allegedly removed him and his mother despite his pain.
- Pimicikamak Cree Nation calls for a full investigation into the incident.
A 16-year-old from Pimicikamak Cree Nation has alleged that a hotel connected to Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre evicted him shortly after his leg surgery. Nicholas Robinson stated that hotel staff forcibly removed him and his mother on Tuesday, even though he was experiencing pain and had difficulty walking following his operation on Friday. The family was awaiting administrative approval for an extended hotel stay, arranged through the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), when the ejection occurred.
Video evidence shared on social media appears to show hotel staff demanding the guests leave past checkout time and requiring a deposit for continued stay. Security personnel were also reportedly present outside the room. Pimicikamak leadership has called for an investigation into the incident, condemning the alleged hostility shown towards the recovering teenager. Canad Inns acknowledged the circulating video and stated they are reviewing the incident to understand the full context, emphasizing their commitment to compassion for patients and their families.
The Manitoba Health Minister has offered support to the family and directed Shared Health to investigate and prevent future occurrences. Indigenous Services Canada, overseeing FNIHB, has not yet commented. The family expressed disappointment, noting that the situation could have been resolved with a brief wait for necessary paperwork.
