Study: Hot Baths Improve Circulation Better Than Cycling
14 Oct
Summary
- Warm baths may boost circulation and lower blood pressure.
- 30-minute hot water immersion showed better results than cycling.
- Hot baths offer benefits for those with limited exercise capacity.

New research indicates that a 30-minute warm bath can significantly improve circulation and reduce blood pressure, potentially outperforming moderate exercise like cycling. The study focused on overweight and obese adults aged 45 to 70, who are often advised to increase physical activity. Participants experienced enhanced blood vessel function after immersing themselves in 40°C water for 30 minutes.
This passive heat therapy resulted in wider blood vessels and a greater reduction in blood pressure compared to a similar duration of moderate cycling. While hot baths cannot entirely replace exercise, they present a viable complementary strategy for sedentary individuals. The findings suggest that regular hot water immersion could be a practical intervention, especially for those with limitations to conventional exercise.
