Hospital Parking Fees Skyrocket, Staff Demand Support
12 Feb
Summary
- Parking costs at Sheffield hospitals have significantly increased.
- Northern General staff face a 75% rise in daily parking fees.
- Children's hospital staff pay nearly £30 for nearby private parking.

Staff at Sheffield hospitals are calling for greater assistance with the rising cost of parking near their workplaces. A recent 75% increase at the Northern General has pushed daily parking fees from £4 to £7.
Meanwhile, employees at the city's children's hospital are paying almost £30 for parking at a nearby Q-Park facility, as there is no dedicated staff parking on-site. This situation has led to significant financial strain for many healthcare workers.
A petition initiated by a Northern General nurse opposing the fee increase has gathered substantial support, with over 1,800 signatures. Concerns have also been raised regarding the maintenance, CCTV coverage, and lighting in the staff car park.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages several hospitals, stated that subsidized permits are available, with costs graded by salary band to benefit lower earners. Additional support includes travel plans and free night shift parking.
