Pregnant Patients Face Parking Cost Hikes
31 Jul
Summary
- Parking costs increased by about 50% at four hospitals.
- Free parking reduced from 30 to 20 minutes.
- Expert warns of added stress for pregnant patients.

Parking charges have seen a substantial rise at several Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust hospitals, including Basildon University Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, Southend University Hospital, and Orsett Hospital. As of July 31, 2026, hourly parking rates have increased, with a three-hour stay now costing £6, up from £4, and the daily rate escalating from £10 to £18. The duration of free parking has also been cut from 30 minutes to 20 minutes.
This hike is causing concern among patients, particularly pregnant individuals, who rely on these facilities. An antenatal expert highlighted that the increased costs add further stress to an already anxious time for expecting mothers. Some individuals have previously spent considerable amounts on parking for frequent appointments. While the trust cites rising operational costs, certain visitor groups, such as chemotherapy patients and blue badge holders, continue to receive free parking. Weekly concession tickets are also available for eligible patients and visitors.
