A recent patient at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital described an "absolutely filthy" bathroom and dirty floors during her three-day stay in January 2026.
Sarah Cadwallader reported that hospital staff appeared overwhelmed by patient numbers, impacting the level of care provided. She noted significant issues with bathroom facilities, including a blocked toilet with no soap and non-functional hand sanitizer.
Cadwallader also observed dirty floors and unrepaired broken items, with one maintenance notice dated Boxing Day remaining unaddressed two weeks later. She felt the conditions were "vile" and contributed to her distress.
The hospital trust acknowledged January was exceptionally busy, with an increase of around 60 patients daily in A&E compared to 2025. They stated cleaning regimes are ongoing but acknowledged issues in busy public areas.
Adding to her distress, Cadwallader received a letter after her discharge informing her of another patient's undiagnosed gut bacteria, though the risk to her was deemed low.
