A groundbreaking "Hospital at Home" service is enabling patients to recover in the comfort of their own homes, transforming healthcare delivery.
This initiative, operational since January 2023, has already supported more than 2,000 individuals. It brings specialized medical professionals, including consultants, pharmacists, nurses, and therapists, directly to patients' residences.
The service offers comprehensive care, including intravenous treatments and rapid diagnostic tests, preventing the need for hospital stays. Research indicates that elderly patients often recover more effectively in familiar surroundings, a principle this service effectively leverages.
"Staying at home will also reduce the travel burden for patients, families and carers, saving time and cost, whilst also freeing up beds for other patients who do need to be in hospital," stated Sarah Jenkins, deputy medical director for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
