16 May
Summary
- Health Minister ordered reports on hospital biomedical waste management.
- A dog escaped with an amputated limb from Vijayawada GGH.
- Hospitals must monitor waste storage via CCTV and conduct staff training.

In response to a recent incident involving a dog absconding with an amputated limb from Vijayawada Government General Hospital, the Health Minister has mandated a thorough review of biomedical waste management practices. Superintendents of all Government General Hospitals in the state have been instructed to submit detailed reports on their waste storage, transportation, and disposal systems.
The Health Department is seeking specific information on how hospitals ensure waste storage rooms remain secured and how materials are moved from operation theatres. Continuous CCTV surveillance of waste storage areas is now a requirement, with daily clearance of these rooms also mandated.
To reinforce protocols, training programs will be conducted for all relevant hospital personnel, including doctors, nurses, and sanitation staff, focusing on correct biomedical waste management procedures. The Vijayawada GGH has already initiated disciplinary actions, including show-cause notices and staff dismissals, following the breach.
