Hospital Convicted of Failings in 22-Year-Old's Tragic Suicide

According to a BBC Breakfast report, a hospital that was previously convicted of serious failings over the death of a young mental health patient had another young woman attempt to harm herself in what were described as startlingly similar circumstances just four months later.

The report focuses on the tragic case of 22-year-old Alice Figueiredo, who died by suicide while receiving treatment at Goodmayes Hospital in North East London in 2015. Alice had attempted to harm herself on 18 separate occasions during her time at the mental health unit, and the hospital had previously recognized the risk on the ward.

Earlier this year, a jury found that not enough was done by the North East London NHS Trust or the ward's manager Benjamin Aninakwa to prevent Alice's death. While the Trust was cleared of corporate manslaughter and Aninakwa was cleared of gross negligence manslaughter, both were convicted of health and safety failings.
