- Initiative aims to improve hospital experience for anxious patients.

Hospitals in Middlesbrough and Stockton are implementing a new initiative to support patients with learning disabilities who find hospital environments stressful. Emergency departments at James Cook University Hospital and University Hospital of North Tees are now distributing care bags designed to alleviate patient distress.
These care bags are thoughtfully equipped with items such as fidget toys, noise-cancelling earphones, eye masks, sensory chew bracelets, and colouring pencils. This provision aims to create a more comfortable and less overwhelming experience for individuals with learning disabilities or autism, who are known to struggle in busy emergency departments.
Specialist nurses involved in the project highlighted that these bags not only provide immediate comfort but also empower patients with information during their hospital journey. Data from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine indicates that individuals with learning disabilities are more likely to require emergency department visits, often with complex health needs, underscoring the importance of such supportive measures.
