Hospice Cuts Home Care Amid Funding Crisis
17 Mar
Summary
- Hospice will stop providing hands-on home care services.
- About 200 patients will be affected by the service change.
- Service discontinuation aims to save £1m over five years.

St Wilfrid's Hospice has announced it will cease offering hands-on care for individuals in their homes. This decision impacts about 200 patients who depend on the service for daily tasks and personal assistance.
The hospice cited a significant and increasing shortfall in funding for domiciliary care as the primary reason for this change. By discontinuing the service, St Wilfrid's anticipates saving approximately £1 million over the next five years.
This move will result in the loss of 15 permanent and 16 flexible staff positions. The hospice is exploring opportunities to reassign some affected employees within the organization. CEO Colin Twomey expressed devastation at parting with dedicated team members, highlighting that rising costs coupled with stagnant funding have led to a projected £1.5 million loss this financial year.
While the hospice's own domiciliary care will end, a spokesperson assured that patients' needs will still be met. Care is commissioned by the NHS, which will continue to assess patient requirements and appoint alternative providers, ensuring a seamless transition for those affected.
