Hormone Therapy May Boost Weight Loss Drugs
21 Oct
Summary
- Hormone therapy may enhance weight loss from GLP-1 drugs.
- Study involved nearly 3,900 women aged 45 and older.
- Combination therapy showed stronger results with semaglutide.
A recent study indicates that hormone therapy, commonly used for menopause symptoms, could enhance the weight-loss effectiveness of GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Zepbound. The research, involving approximately 3,900 women aged 45 and older, explored the combined impact of hormone therapy and these weight-loss medications.
Findings presented at the Menopause Society's annual meeting revealed that women using hormone therapy alongside semaglutide achieved greater weight loss compared to those using semaglutide alone. At one year, the combination therapy group lost about 11% of their body weight, versus 9.5% for semaglutide-only users.
While tirzepatide also showed modest benefits with hormone therapy, the effect was more pronounced with semaglutide, which acts on GLP-1 receptors. This difference may suggest a specific interaction, though further research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
