Mother Threatened With Police Over Unassisted Birth
1 Jun
Summary
- Woman traumatized by threats of police intervention for unassisted birth.
- NHS home birth services suspended due to staffing concerns.
- Seven unassisted home births recorded since service suspension.

In November 2025, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust suspended its home birth services due to safety concerns related to staffing levels. This suspension led to an increase in unassisted home births, with seven recorded in Gloucestershire since then. One mother, Bethany, shared her "traumatising" experience after giving birth at home without a midwife. She was allegedly threatened with police and social services intervention if she refused to take her newborn son to the hospital for observation, a decision she opposed due to concerns about bonding and breastfeeding.
The ambulance service stated that their clinicians provided dedicated care and followed correct clinical guidance, including consulting with the maternity team. They noted that clinicians have a duty to explain all possible options when clinical advice is refused. The trust's director for safety emphasized the rapid and potentially catastrophic risks associated with unassisted births, highlighting that doulas, while supportive, are not medical professionals.
The NHS home birth suspension was initially planned for two weeks but was extended. The service is anticipated to be reinstated in the autumn. While the trust acknowledged the suspension reduced choices for some families, it prioritized the decision based on staff-raised safety concerns. They aim to safely reinstate home births and reopen services at Cheltenham Birth Centre.
