Holi colors: A silent threat to your lungs?
3 Mar
Summary
- Synthetic Holi colors contain fine particles like PM 2.5.
- Heavy metals and industrial dyes are present in some colors.
- Inhaled particles can cause lung irritation and asthma-like symptoms.

Pulmonologists are raising concerns about the respiratory impact of synthetic Holi colors. In the days following the festival, clinics often see a rise in patients experiencing breathing difficulties and persistent coughing. The primary culprit identified is the fine particulate matter, similar to PM 2.5, found in many synthetic colors.
These microscopic particles, sometimes containing heavy metals like lead and chromium or industrial dyes, can penetrate deep into the lungs. Once inhaled, they irritate the lung lining, potentially triggering bronchospasm, which narrows the airways and impedes breathing.
Furthermore, exposure to these irritants can lead to reactive airways dysfunction syndrome. This serious condition can develop even after a single intense exposure and cause sudden asthma-like symptoms, such as chest tightness and breathlessness, in individuals with no prior history of asthma.
