Mystery virus surges in Bay Area: HMPV strikes
10 Mar
Summary
- A little-known virus, HMPV, is circulating widely in Northern California.
- HMPV symptoms mimic common illnesses like flu and COVID-19.
- There is no vaccine or specific treatment for HMPV.

A respiratory virus, human metapneumovirus (HMPV), is experiencing a significant surge in Northern California. Identified in 2001, HMPV typically circulates seasonally from winter through spring. This year, wastewater monitoring indicates widespread transmission in communities such as San Francisco, Sacramento, Davis, and Vallejo.
The virus presents a diagnostic challenge as its symptoms closely mirror those of other common respiratory illnesses, including upper respiratory issues that can progress to pneumonia or bronchiolitis. Vulnerable populations, including older adults and young children, are at higher risk for severe complications.
Currently, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Management focuses on symptom relief through rest, fluids, and supportive care. Standard public health recommendations for preventing respiratory virus transmission, such as hand hygiene and staying home when sick, are advised.
