A groundbreaking surgical procedure at Mankweng Hospital in Limpopo has successfully separated conjoined twin boys, marking a historic first for the province. The complex eight-hour operation was led by paediatric surgeon Dr. Nyaweleni Tshifularo and his multidisciplinary team.
Extensive preparation preceded the surgery, including seven multidisciplinary meetings and dry runs to ensure optimal outcomes. The medical team received full support from the provincial leadership, enabling them to proceed with confidence. The twins were born under emergency circumstances, and their condition was stabilized before the separation.
Following the successful separation, the twins are in stable condition with good hemodynamic status and are under close medical supervision in the neonatal intensive care unit. Their mother expressed immense joy, and the successful operation has been lauded by Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba and President Cyril Ramaphosa as a remarkable achievement for rural healthcare in South Africa.
In recognition of the family's journey, a new house is being constructed for the twins' 29-year-old mother in Lulekani, with completion expected within two months, offering them a fresh start.
