Summary
- 32-year-old woman with severe heart disease safely delivered a baby girl.
- Two exceptionally large fibroids, weighing nearly 1.7kg combined, were removed.
- Doctors successfully preserved the mother's uterus despite heavy bleeding.
In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, successfully delivered a baby girl to a 32-year-old woman facing severe health complications. The pregnancy was complicated by serious heart disease, including coarctation of the aorta and a bicuspid aortic valve, alongside two exceptionally large uterine fibroids.
An interventional radiology team implemented a strategy using balloon catheters to control blood flow to the uterus if needed during the C-section. Surgeons then removed both fibroids, one measuring approximately 15x14 cm and weighing 960g, the other 14x12 cm and weighing 740g.
Despite experiencing heavy bleeding, estimated at two litres, the patient did not require a massive transfusion. Crucially, surgeons managed to preserve her uterus. The successful outcome highlighted the importance of careful planning and collaboration between obstetrics, gynaecology, anaesthesia, and interventional radiology teams.
