Fiber Diet Outperforms Diabetes Drug
18 Oct
Summary
- High-fiber diet may be more effective than metformin for diabetes.
- Study shows fiber diet lowers BMI and blood sugar levels.
- Fiber diet positively impacts gut microbiome composition.

A recent study has revealed that a healthy diet rich in fiber may offer superior outcomes for individuals managing type 2 diabetes and obesity, a condition often termed 'diabesity.' This research, published in Frontiers in Microbiology, observed 48 adults recently diagnosed with both conditions. Participants were divided into two groups: one followed a high-fiber diet for 84 days, while the other took metformin.
Results indicated that the high-fiber diet group demonstrated a lower average Body Mass Index (BMI) and improved hemoglobin A1c levels, a key indicator of blood sugar control, compared to the metformin group. Researchers also noted significant positive changes in the gut microbiome of those on the fiber diet. Beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus increased, while Bilophila wadsworthia, linked to chronic inflammation, decreased.
Experts not involved in the study acknowledged the findings, emphasizing the crucial role of diet in managing diabetes and obesity. However, they also advised caution due to the study's small size and the need for further, larger-scale research. Future studies aim to explore the specific types of fiber and their differential effects on the body and gut microbiome, offering a more nuanced understanding of dietary interventions for metabolic health.
