Blood Pressure Control Saves Most Lives: Study
12 Oct
Summary
- Improving blood pressure treatment could prevent over 500,000 deaths annually.
- Only one in five adults with high blood pressure have it under control.
- High blood pressure often has no symptoms, increasing risks.

A study analyzing data from 20 countries reveals that enhancing blood pressure treatment could avert more deaths than any other preventive strategy examined. Researchers found that extending high blood pressure treatment to more individuals is estimated to prevent 518,476 cardiovascular deaths each year.
In comparison, improving access to statins could save 340,682 lives annually, and better blood sugar control for diabetics could prevent 309,520 deaths. Despite these benefits, the study indicates that only about one-fifth of adults with high blood pressure have their condition managed effectively. High blood pressure, which often presents no symptoms, can lead to serious health issues over time, including heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.
