22 Feb

- Free blood pressure checks are available for eligible individuals over 40.

An estimated 4.1 million individuals in England are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure, a condition health officials are now calling a "silent killer." This lack of awareness significantly elevates the risk of serious health events such as heart attacks and strokes. In response, the NHS is intensifying efforts to make blood pressure checks more accessible.
Free checks are being offered through various community channels, including pharmacies for eligible people over 40, dentist and optician appointments, and even barbershops and mosques. The NHS Health Check program, available every five years for those aged 40-74 without pre-existing related conditions, also plays a crucial role in early detection. If an invitation hasn't been received, citizens are encouraged to contact their GP or local council.
Dr. Claire Fuller of NHS England highlighted the importance of seeking trusted advice and taking up health check offers, emphasizing that a simple check can be life-saving. Regina Giblin from the British Heart Foundation echoed these sentiments, noting that increased public interest in high blood pressure information is positive. She stressed that manageable lifestyle changes and medical intervention can effectively control high blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risks.
