Twelve cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed in Kalamassery, Ernakulam, within the past month. Health officials are investigating the source, with initial assessments suggesting the infections were contracted outside the municipality, possibly from consuming food elsewhere, rather than from local water sources. This concern arises as the affected individuals are a mobile population, frequently traveling for work or education.
Authorities have implemented precautionary measures, including regular cleaning drives and water chlorination, especially after similar clusters were observed in 2024. While water quality tests have come back satisfactory and no leaks were found, 14 samples from local juice shops and eateries have been collected for further testing. Residents have been advised through WhatsApp to adhere to hygiene practices to prevent person-to-person transmission.
Hepatitis A, known locally as jaundice, is a liver infection spread through contaminated food and water. While usually resolving on its own, it can rarely lead to severe complications like liver failure, particularly in older individuals or those with pre-existing liver conditions. Prevention strategies include ensuring clean water and food, vaccination, and maintaining good personal hygiene, as the virus can persist in the environment.
