2 Oct
Summary
- Two cases of contagious Hepatitis A reported among pupils.
- Parents received guidance on symptoms and hygiene measures.
- Health bosses confirm low risk to public and no transmission evidence.

Two cases of the contagious Hepatitis A infection have been reported among pupils at Newcastle schools, prompting a health alert for parents. Benton Park Primary and Central Walker Primary issued letters to families, including guidance from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on recognizing symptoms and enhancing hygiene practices.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection affecting the liver, typically spread through contaminated food or water, or person-to-person contact via poor hand hygiene. UKHSA is collaborating with the schools to ensure necessary public health actions are taken.
Health officials have stated that the risk to the general public, other students, and teachers is low. There is currently no evidence to suggest the illness has been transmitted within either school. Signs of infection include flu-like symptoms, fever, and jaundice.
