Heart Disease Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
24 Sep
Summary
- Breathlessness and fatigue can signal heart disease, not just stress.
- A week-long campaign promotes symptom recognition and healthy lifestyles.
- Early evaluation of symptoms is crucial for preventing medical emergencies.
New guidance from cardiologists at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) emphasizes that breathlessness, unusual fatigue, chest discomfort, palpitations, dizziness, and reduced exercise tolerance may be early indicators of heart disease. These symptoms should not be dismissed as stress, ageing, or lack of fitness. SGPGIMS recently launched a week-long campaign preceding World Heart Day on September 29, featuring a walkathon and advocating for the global "Don't Miss a Beat" initiative. This campaign aims to enhance the early recognition of symptoms, encourage timely medical assessments, and promote healthier living habits, such as dedicating at least 20 minutes daily to physical activity.
Cardiologists highlighted that heart health is a shared community responsibility, requiring regular physical activity, balanced diets, tobacco avoidance, and stress management. Prevention is key, starting long before a heart attack. They stressed the importance of controlling blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, alongside complete tobacco abstinence. Even minor, achievable lifestyle changes can significantly benefit cardiovascular health. Cardiologists also pointed out the need for increased awareness among women and younger individuals, noting that women might experience or report heart-related symptoms differently, and these signs should not be overlooked.
