16 May
Summary
- A hospital worker experienced three heart attacks within four days.
- A blood clot formed after a stent procedure led to the heart attacks.
- A specialized procedure broke up artery calcium, aiding recovery.

Tommy Bell, a 62-year-old hospital worker, experienced a harrowing medical emergency, suffering three heart attacks within a span of four days. His ordeal began when he sought treatment for chest pain the day before Thanksgiving, leading to the discovery of a blocked "widowmaker" artery. Following a procedure to place a stent, a blood clot formed, triggering his first heart attack.
Doctors managed to stabilize Bell by placing another stent, but he suffered two more heart attacks shortly after. An interventional cardiologist explained that a rare complication, a blood clot forming in the stent, occurred due to significant arterial calcification. This calcium limited the stent's expansion, impeding blood flow and increasing clot risk.
To address the severe calcification, Bell underwent an intracoronary lithotripsy procedure. This involved using a specialized balloon to emit electrical shocks, breaking up the calcium and allowing the stent to open fully. He also received additional blood thinners and a second stent. Bell described an overwhelming outpouring of support from his hospital community during his recovery.
After a two-week recovery at home, Bell returned to work, finding comfort in familiar faces. He is now actively working with a dietary team to modify his eating habits, focusing on leaner meats and healthier salads, to further reduce his risk of future cardiac events. Bell emphasized his commitment to changing his diet to secure a healthier future.
