Your Postcode Dictates Your Healthy Years
16 Apr
Summary
- Healthy life expectancy varies significantly by postcode.
- Affluent areas offer nearly double the healthy years.
- Cost of living crisis worsens health in deprived areas.

New statistics indicate that where you live dramatically influences your healthy life expectancy. Girls born in affluent areas like Kensington and Chelsea are projected to live until 87, with nearly 80% of those years spent in good health. This contrasts sharply with those in the most deprived areas, who may only experience 48 healthy years.
This disparity extends across the UK, with boys in Blackpool predicted to reach only 73, and girls in Glasgow living until 78. The ONS data highlights that life expectancy inequality between nations has increased since the pandemic.
Even in areas like Liverpool and Manchester, boys born into deprivation can expect around 50 healthy years, a stark 20-year deficit compared to more affluent counterparts. In Wales, women in deprived areas face 23 fewer healthy years than those in sought-after locations.
Experts attribute these declines in deprived areas, exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis and fuel poverty, to increased risks of cold-related deaths and mounting pressure on the NHS. These factors contribute to higher rates of circulatory diseases, dementia, and respiratory conditions, with those in deprived areas facing significant barriers to care.
