Eat Well, Live Longer: Your Diet's Lifespan Power
17 Feb
Summary
- Healthy diets can extend life expectancy by one to three years.
- Dietary benefits persist even when accounting for genetic predispositions.
- Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are key to a longer life.

New research indicates that adhering to five recognized healthy eating plans can add significant years to one's life, even for individuals with genetics not naturally inclined toward longevity. This extensive study, analyzing data from over 100,000 participants over a decade, found a clear correlation between diet quality and lifespan.
Participants whose diets most closely aligned with healthy eating patterns lived longer. For example, a 45-year-old man could gain two to three additional years of life by adopting a healthier diet. Women also experienced benefits, gaining an average of one to two extra years.
Crucially, these longevity advantages were observed even after researchers controlled for genetic differences. This suggests that healthy eating habits can indeed help mitigate inherited risks. Diets emphasizing whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, common across several healthy eating patterns, were strongly associated with longer life expectancies for both men and women.
