Malnutrition Alert: Official Visits Affected Villages
22 Aug
Summary
- Eight children died from seasonal illnesses, primarily malaria and measles.
- An official reviewed health, nutrition, and sanitation in affected villages.
- Surveillance has increased due to concerns over malnutrition and healthcare access.

Since June, eight children have succumbed to seasonal illnesses, predominantly malaria and measles, in the Baihar and Birsa blocks of Balaghat. Local representatives, however, suggest the death toll may exceed twenty.
In response to the escalating health crisis, Madhya Pradesh's Principal Secretary for Women and Child Development, G V Rashmi, conducted a visit to the affected villages on Thursday. She inspected Anganwadi centers and a primary health center, focusing on health, nutrition, and sanitation.
Rashmi issued directives for the close monitoring of malnourished children, ensuring their admission to nutrition rehabilitation centers, and conducting regular health check-ups. Emphasis was also placed on improving sanitation across various community spaces and ensuring access to safe drinking water.
The administration has intensified surveillance in the remote tribal regions. This heightened vigilance stems from significant concerns regarding malnutrition, inadequate healthcare access, and poor sanitation conditions prevalent in the area.
