27 Mar
Summary
- Health P.E.I. board met following CEO's recent departure.
- Public shared experiences and concerns about healthcare.
- System faces pressure due to leadership changes and past agreements.
Health P.E.I. board members gathered in Summerside for their initial meeting since the recent dismissal of their chief executive officer. The board received input from the Prince County Hospital Foundation and community members regarding various health-related issues affecting the province. Interim CEO Laurae Kloschinsky highlighted the necessity of gathering direct feedback from Islanders to evaluate and improve the healthcare system.
The province's healthcare system has been under considerable strain. This situation intensified with the departure of CEO Melanie Fraser earlier this month, following a period of discord between Health P.E.I. and front-line workers. This move coincided with a letter from 93 physicians expressing a loss of confidence in Fraser's leadership.
Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher, present at the meeting, voiced his organization's challenges, noting a lack of tangible support from Health P.E.I. Despite community engagement, he stated that "lip service" has not translated into action.
Board chair Richard Wedge acknowledged public concern over the CEO's departure and the desire for stability. He clarified the board's limited involvement in the decision, having been informed shortly before the public announcement. Wedge emphasized the need for a "steady hand at the wheel" and noted the unique reporting structure of the CEO, accountable to both the provincial health minister and the board.
Despite the challenges, Kloschinsky expressed confidence in the "phenomenally skilled" staff and the quality of care provided. Wedge also pointed to positive developments, such as the near elimination of Hepatitis C and plans for colorectal cancer screening enhancements. The board will establish a plan for appointing a permanent CEO.
