Hartlepool Hospital A&E Closure: No Return In Sight

The University Hospital of Hartlepool will not see its Accident and Emergency department return, health authorities have announced. The A&E service closed over a decade ago in August 2011, despite years of campaigning for its reinstatement. Officials cited financial unsustainability and a lack of patient volume as insurmountable barriers to reopening.
Instead of reintroducing A&E services, the hospital site is slated for an expansion of other existing medical provisions. This includes plans for a new surgical hub. The meeting also addressed concerns regarding the lifespan of the nearby University Hospital of North Tees, which is estimated to have only seven to eight years remaining before major redevelopment is necessary.
