An outbreak of the Andes strain of hantavirus has been reported on the MV Hondius, a cruise ship docked off the coast of West Africa. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is coordinating with the World Health Organisation and government partners to manage the situation for British nationals aboard.
Those affected by the virus experience flu-like symptoms, which can escalate to severe respiratory distress or kidney failure in extreme cases. Transmission between humans is rare, occurring only through very close contact. The UKHSA has stated that the risk to the general public remains very low.
British nationals on the MV Hondius are being repatriated to the UK, where they will undergo isolation, regular testing, and monitoring by healthcare professionals. Arrangements are being made to support their safe return, with a focus on public health protection. Three individuals, including a British national, were evacuated to the Netherlands for medical treatment.
The vessel is en route to the Canary Islands, where Spanish authorities will assume responsibility. Around 150 passengers and crew are on board under precautionary measures. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the outbreak and if any individuals beyond the ship's occupants have been infected.
