Deadly Hantavirus Spreads on Cruise Ship: 3 Fatalities
11 May
Summary
- Seven cases of Andes hantavirus confirmed on cruise ship.
- Three individuals have tragically died from the virus.
- An additional two suspected cases are under investigation.

The World Health Organization has confirmed seven cases of the Andes hantavirus among passengers on the cruise ship MV Hondius. This outbreak has tragically resulted in three deaths thus far.
The WHO's updated count, as of Monday, now includes nine reported cases. This figure was bolstered by France reporting a French passenger, who had been evacuated from the ship, testing positive for the virus.
Further adding to the concern, two more cases are suspected to be hantavirus. One of these involves an individual believed to be the first infected, who unfortunately passed away before diagnostic tests could be performed. The situation underscores the serious nature of hantavirus transmission.
