Hantavirus Deaths in Venezuela Spark Health Alert

Three confirmed hantavirus infections have led to fatalities in Venezuela's eastern Anzoategui state, as announced by the nation's health ministry. The ministry has reassured the public, classifying these as specific, isolated events and emphasizing that there is no scientific evidence of person-to-person transmission within the country.

Hantaviruses are known to be carried by rodents and are transmitted through their excrement. Symptoms, including fever and muscle aches, typically appear one to eight weeks after exposure. This Venezuelan situation occurs in the wake of a concluded hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship, which had previously resulted in three deaths and thirteen infections from the Andes virus strain, with no new cases reported since May.
