Doctors at Yashoda Medicity in Ghaziabad have successfully reattached the completely amputated right hand of an 18-year-old man. The severe construction-site accident occurred on July 21, when the patient's hand was trapped in a machine, leading to significant blood loss. The severed hand was preserved and brought to the hospital, enabling an emergency surgical attempt.
A specialized team performed a seven-hour operation, addressing the crush injury by first stabilizing fractured wrist bones. Microsurgical techniques were then employed to reconnect arteries, veins, tendons, nerves, and soft tissues. The patient received a blood transfusion during the procedure due to prior blood loss, and the surgical team successfully restored blood flow to the reattached hand.
The patient has recovered well and has been discharged in stable condition. While movement and sensation will return gradually, he faces a period of physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Medical professionals stressed the urgency in such cases, advising careful handling of the severed limb and prompt transfer to facilities with microsurgical capabilities, while simultaneously focusing on controlling the patient's bleeding and stabilizing their condition.
