Maternity Safety Falls Short at Great Western Hospital
10 Jul
Summary
- Maternity service re-rated as 'requires improvement'.
- 21 of 138 maternity guidelines were found out of date.
- Hospital states significant steps are being taken.
The maternity service at Great Western Hospital (GWH) has been rated as 'requires improvement' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection in January. Inspectors found that women were 'weren't being kept as safe as they should be' within the maternity ward. Catherine Campbell, CQC deputy director, noted that while the service responded well to concerns raised by women, a critical issue identified was that 21 out of the service's 138 maternity guidelines were out of date. A spokesperson for GWH has since stated that significant steps have been taken to address the areas highlighted by the CQC, and further work is planned to enhance the maternity services.
