Hepatitis Outbreak in Gurgaon: 32 Cases and Rising Fears
17 Feb
Summary
- 32 hepatitis cases, including 3 of Hepatitis B, confirmed in Chhainsa village.
- Seven deaths reported in the last 15 days, prompting random screenings.
- Illegal water connections and E. coli contamination in water samples cited.

An outbreak of hepatitis has gripped Chhainsa village in Gurgaon, with 32 confirmed cases and seven deaths reported over the past 15 days. Three of the confirmed infections are Hepatitis B, while the rest are Hepatitis C. Health officials are actively screening residents and have tested over 800 individuals.
Investigations have identified potential sources of contamination, including 25 illegal drinking water connections that led to leakages. Water samples from several households tested positive for E. coli, indicating faecal contamination, and stored water showed inadequate chlorination. These findings have heightened concerns about the village's water supply.
In response, health teams have removed illegal water connections and are flushing supply lines. Vaccinations against Hepatitis B and C are underway for close contacts and at-risk individuals. While most patients are being monitored at home, two are admitted to the civil hospital and have stabilized. The investigation into the exact cause of the deaths and infections is ongoing.
