Gujarat's Health Shift: Supplements Replace Cures
20 Feb
Summary
- Nutraceutical sales in Gujarat surged by 42.7% from Jan 2022 to Jan 2026.
- Over half of preventive users spend more than Rs 2,000 monthly on supplements.
- Medical experts caution against unadvised supplement consumption.

Gujarat's health landscape is evolving, moving from hospital-centric care to proactive home-based wellness strategies. A notable trend shows adults increasingly investing in nutraceuticals like protein powders and omega-3 capsules to manage rising risks of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
The market data reflects this shift, with nutraceutical sales increasing by 42.7% from January 2022 to January 2026, reaching Rs 274.30 crore. Mineral supplements alone experienced an 80.2% growth. A study revealed that 44% of stakeholders in Gujarat identify as preventive users of nutraceuticals, with over half spending more than Rs 2,000 monthly.
This transition signals a deeper change in health perception, with 67% viewing nutraceuticals as a personal health necessity or an extension of healthcare. While consumers see this trend as irreversible, medical experts, including Dr. R.C. Damani and Dr. Dhiren Mehta, urge caution. They stress that indiscriminate supplementation without proper diagnosis can be counterproductive and potentially harmful, advocating for dietary planning and medically guided prescriptions for deficiencies.
