School Hostels Under Scrutiny After Student Illness

A recent incident involving 85 students falling ill at the PP Savani International School hostel in Surat has prompted a statewide inspection order. Health Minister Praful Pansheriya directed authorities on Sunday to thoroughly inspect all student hostels, regardless of their type (government, private, etc.), to ensure compliance with health department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The illness was reported on Saturday, with students experiencing stomach pain and vomiting after their evening meal. The Surat Municipal Corporation's health department stated that 73 students received outpatient treatment, while 12 were admitted. As of Sunday, 8 students remained hospitalized in stable condition, with 4 having been discharged.

Inspections of the hostel's kitchen and canteen revealed potential issues, leading to the collection of six food samples and the issuance of a notice for negligence. The institution was strictly instructed to prioritize student health and immediately seek medical attention for any student exhibiting symptoms.

Minister Pansheriya emphasized that SOP compliance is now mandatory for all hostels. Failure to adhere to these procedures will result in punitive action, ensuring student safety and well-being across Gujarat.
