Lung Cancer Surges in Gujarat: Over 4,800 Cases in 5 Years

The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) has observed a consistent rise in lung cancer diagnoses over the past five years. From 2021 to 2025, the institute documented a total of 4,830 lung cancer patients. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for public health awareness and early detection initiatives.

During this period, 3,931 male patients (81.4%) and 899 female patients (18.6%) received treatment. The GLOBOCAN 2022 report indicates India faces over 1.12 lakh new lung cancer cases and nearly 98,000 deaths annually, with global figures reaching 26 lakh new cases and over 18 lakh deaths yearly.

Health experts attribute the primary cause of lung cancer to tobacco consumption in all forms. Other significant contributors include passive smoking, air pollution, and occupational exposure to hazardous substances like asbestos. Persistent cough, coughing up blood, and difficulty breathing are among the symptoms requiring immediate medical attention.

GCRI offers advanced treatments, including robotic surgery and various radiation therapies, often at subsidized rates or free under government schemes. Marking World Lung Cancer Day, the institute urged citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles, quit tobacco, and undergo regular screenings to improve survival rates and save lives.
