- The rule aims to prevent deterioration by ensuring concerns are heard.
Guernsey's emergency department is preparing to implement Martha's Rule, a significant patient safety initiative developed by the NHS. This new scheme will grant patients and their families the right to seek an urgent second opinion when a patient's health deteriorates. Health leaders have confirmed that Guernsey will adopt the guidance and adhere to the established timeframes for its implementation.
The decision to roll out Martha's Rule nationwide in NHS England hospitals by March 2028 follows the tragic death of Martha Mills, aged 13. She died from sepsis after her family's concerns about her worsening condition were not adequately addressed. A coroner's report later indicated she likely would have survived if transferred to intensive care and treated sooner.
While Guernsey's Health and Social Care President George Oswald stated that formal alignment with the NHS is appropriate, he noted potential challenges for maternity services due to specialized staff availability. Workarounds, including telephone consultations with Jersey or the UK, are being explored for such situations. He assured that adequate 24/7 provision currently exists, with the intensive care outreach team playing a key role.
