Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, has initiated a significant public health effort, screening around 400,000 residents for cognitive conditions since April 2024. This initiative utilizes a newly established digital dementia prevention and care network, including the 'Wisdom Memory' smart mini-program, which has identified 23,000 positive cases for early intervention.
The city's health commission and civil affairs bureau have also launched a program targeting elderly care homes. This program aims to complete screenings in all such facilities across Guangzhou by the end of 2027. These efforts align with proposals from Ouyang Zhihong, advocating for a closed-loop system of screening, intervention, and public education.
Further enhancing this strategy, a dementia prevention and treatment alliance has been formed, involving core hospitals across Guangzhou's 11 districts. This collaborative approach integrates community family doctor teams and aims to increase public awareness of dementia prevention to at least 80 percent of the elderly population.
