Hospital Ceiling Collapse Sparks Safety Fears
29 Jul
Summary
- Ceiling debris fell in the orthopedics ward, no injuries reported.
- Water leaks observed in the ophthalmology operation theatre.
- Hospital administration cites ageing infrastructure as a factor.

Concerns about the condition of the Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital have been amplified following two recent incidents. On Monday, a section of the ceiling in the orthopedics department (ward 20) collapsed, causing debris to fall where staff rest. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this event.
Further compounding these worries, photographs shared on Tuesday revealed water leaking from the ceiling of the Ophthalmology operation theatre. Buckets were placed to collect the dripping rainwater, raising questions about hygiene and patient care in this critical area.
In response to these incidents, the hospital's additional medical superintendent acknowledged the hospital's "ageing infrastructure." However, he clarified that the removal of plaster was a "preventative" measure. The statement also noted that the ophthalmology ward is currently undergoing renovation and is expected to be handed over soon.
The hospital administration assured that patient care services remain uninterrupted and that necessary maintenance is being conducted for public safety. They emphasized that the proactive removal of loose plaster should not be mistaken for a structural failure.
