Tiny Bristle Leads to Bowel Removal Surgery
1 Jul
Summary
- A young man swallowed a wire bristle from a grill brush.
- The bristle lodged in his bowel, causing an intestinal puncture.
- Doctors removed three inches of his bowel during emergency surgery.

A routine backyard barbecue led to a severe medical emergency for a Minnesota teen who unknowingly swallowed a tiny wire bristle from a grill cleaning brush. The incident occurred on May 26, just after Memorial Day.
Several days after eating a burger cooked on the family grill, the young man began experiencing severe stomach pain. A CT scan on June 3 revealed the metal bristle had become embedded in his bowel and started puncturing his intestine.
Emergency surgery was performed on June 4 to remove approximately three inches of his bowel. He remained hospitalized until June 7. Following the ordeal, his mother emphasized the hidden danger of wire grill brushes, urging public awareness and a switch to safer cleaning tools.
This incident highlights concerns previously addressed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which recalled over 13 million wire brushes earlier this year. Safer alternatives like wooden scrapers, steam cleaners, or aluminum foil balls are recommended.
