Green Bean Recalls: Listeria, Choking Hazards Found

Numerous safety recalls have historically impacted various food items, including green beans, a popular canned staple. Contamination can occur at any supply chain stage, leading to recalls for foreign objects, allergens, or foodborne illnesses such as botulism. Significant recalls involved Good & Gather cut green beans in 2025 due to foreign objects, posing choking hazards. National Frozen Foods Corporation recalled frozen green beans in 2018 because of Listeria monocytogenes concerns.

Earlier recalls include Sager Creek Foods in 2016 for potential shellfish contamination, a serious allergen risk. Cascadian Farms organic frozen green beans were recalled in 2015 and again in 2016 for Listeria monocytogenes. In 2007, Lakeside Foods Inc. recalled canned green beans due to the risk of botulism from Clostridium botulinum contamination, identified by leaking cans.

Even Del Monte issued a recall in 1990 for undercooked French style green beans. Despite these varied and potentially severe threats, including choking hazards and dangerous bacteria, no illnesses or deaths were publicly reported for these specific green bean recalls. This demonstrates the proactive stance taken by manufacturers and regulatory bodies like the FDA to ensure consumer safety.
