An 83-year-old woman, Brigitte Stegemann, reportedly died covered in blood after a problematic Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) procedure in Ontario, Canada. Her granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, expressed shock and distress, stating her grandmother had previously rejected MAiD and appeared disbelieving when its finality was explained. Kranendonk claims her grandmother sobbed, stating, "I've made a mistake," days before the scheduled July 10th death.
According to Kranendonk, a second MAiD assessment occurred after Stegemann had already denied the procedure. She alleges a nurse described the process vaguely, omitting terms like "death" or "dying." Despite the granddaughter's concerns about her grandmother's mental state and capacity for consent, doctors proceeded. The procedure was reportedly completed after a nurse struggled with an IV, leaving Stegemann with "blood all over the place."
Brigitte Stegemann died within 10 minutes of the procedure. Kranendonk is appealing to the Chief Coroner's Office and the Patient Ombudsman for a full investigation into the safeguards allegedly bypassed. Belleville Police have confirmed an investigation is ongoing with their Criminal Investigations Division, seeking to understand how the events transpired.
